The burglary was discovered around 10:51 a.m. Monday, Aug. 13, at a home on Route 106 (Silvermine Road) when the family returned from vacation and found they had been the target of thieves, said New Canaan Police Chief Leon Krolikowski.
The residence was entered through a rear sliding glass door that was removed by the burglars. A number of items were stolen during the burglary. The residence did not have an alarm system, the chief said.
"Most burglars are not master criminals," said Krolikowski. "They’re usually looking for an easy opportunity to get into a house without being seen."
He added that almost all of the burglaries the department investigate involve residences that are unlocked and/or where alarms systems are not set.
"Burglars love it when you make their job easier for them," the chief said.
The department offered the following tips to beat the burglars:
- Be wary of unknown visitors: Always check the identity of visitors before admitting them to your home. including workers.
- Be a good neighbor: Get to know your neighbors, watch out for them and report suspicious activity, persons or vehicles in your neighborhood immediately.
- Don't leave clues you are away: If you go on vacation never leave clues that you are away. Cancel newspaper deliveries and have someone pick-up your mail or have it held. And avoid social media posts saying you are away.
- Don't let burglars hide: Keep bushes and trees well-trimmed away from the front of your home.
- Key: Never leave keys to your home inside a vehicle.
The chief also suggests having a security survey conducted by the department, call 203-594-3512, install security video cameras, and always use an alarm system.
"We urge all New Canaan residents to activate their alarm systems, secure all valuables, report suspicious persons or vehicles to our Department via 911," Krolikowski said.
